Shameless Tuesdays: Livre 61 | Daniel Takes A Train
Daniel Takes A Train from its London home nonstop to Manchester going 60 kilometers an hour. Meanwhile, another train leaves London to Manchester going 90 kilometers an hour, with a couple of 10-minute stops in-between. Who will show up first, and will they get the Last Ticket To Tango?
Reuniting in 2018 after a decades-long breakup, Daniel Takes A Train aims to claim the glory they should've received in the 1980s. Their sound grooves like a nonstop disco, with hip-shaking melodies like "Stranger Things Can Happen" and "My Town" cutting the rug like nobody's business. It also knows how to deliver some soul food, in the form of "Dreaming of a Better Day" and "The First Picture Of You". Last Ticket To Tango feels like a dance-y Clash record, like if Joe Strummer was a smooth pimp daddy in control of the nightlife. And now, pulling up to its destination, Daniel Takes A Train has arrived to unleash its Shameless Tuesdays playlist!
Here's what the band has to say about this week's playlist:
"The stars are out tonight, what do they know?" How do you compile a playlist for a band that’s been inactive for almost 30 years and whose chosen musical palette ranges from indiejangle to film soundtracks, new wave, ska, jazz, soul and synth pop? Well, we’ve certainly enjoyed making the album "Last Ticket To Tango" which harnesses some of our earliest and most enduring influences and reckon that if there was ever a movement for our brand of melody-ladenpop, in which melancholia meets heavenly bliss at regular intervals, you’d find a few like-minded souls right here on this playlist.
There are some fellow 80’s travellers of course (TrashcanSinatras, Candy Opera, Lloyd Cole and Prefab Sprout) but listen out also for some newer arrivals to the party (Teleman, Palace Winter, The Midnight) whoprobably don’t remember the 80’s, but to our ears have absorbed its finer moments.Ideally, you’ll hear this before heading off, after astrong cocktail or two, to a slightly care-worn old ballroom where every Saturday night still sprightly couples defy the passing of time and perfect the mambo and cha-cha-cha while ancient stars twinkle high above them in the night sky. Let the music play, this could be your last ticket to tango.
