PAX EAST 2023 | "Turnip Boy Robs a Bank"
Why oh why does Turnip Boy keep doing crime? First, he committed tax evasion, which resulted in him finding out some secrets about his father. Now, Snoozy Kazoo is getting him deeper in trouble, this time by giving him a gun. Welcome to the madness that is Turnip Boy Robs a Bank, the most logical next step in the living vegetable’s growth as a worldwide terror.
At PAX East, Snoozy Kazoo gave players the chance to experience the first few bits of Turnip Boy Robs a Bank. It begins with a tutorial, which reacquaints fans of his first game to his top-down battle roots. His stumbles are now convenient barrel roll dodges, which are perfect to avoid any enemy fire. His massive sword has also been replaced with a handy handgun, with aiming controls that will feel familiar to Enter the Gungeon connoisseurs. Once his new skills are acquired, it’s time to get in the van!
Your first experience robbing a bank is a little sloppy, with the tellers already shooting signals to the fuzz to come take care of Turnip Boy. Although you get to shake down a few customers of some dough, it’s not enough to impress the mafia. Getting a signal jammer is where the true chaos begins, as Turnip Boy takes cash, lives, and the occasional chat with those indifferent to his crime. All of it is captured with the trademark humor that made Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion a comedic gem.
As my time was short with the demo, I tried my best to see how far I could get to pleasing my mafia family. I reached a situation that required a laser to open a safe, hence why I hightailed it back to the van to do some black market shopping. Once the laser was in my possession, I drove back to the bank and dove as much as I could to reach the top of the bank offices. What awaited in the safe were gold bars, with the money signs clearly flashing proudly in the vegetable’s eyes.
Still, after the demo was over, I had some questions. How did Turnip Boy once again cross paths with the mafia? Why aren’t your comrades lending a hand in the bank robbing? What really happened in the days before sentient food? How come there’s a banana swimming in a goopy tank?
I’m certain some of these questions will be answered when Snoozy Kazoo unleashes Turnip Boy again to an unsuspected world. The demo was smooth and fun, and it made me remember why this series has become such a darling in the indie scene. But after he robs a bank, where else can Turnip Boy go from there? Are nuclear codes in his future? (Jeez, I sure hope not!)
Turnip Boy Robs a Bank hits PC and consoles later in 2023. Pray that no one gives him a rocket launcher in the process. Or do, if you want to be a bad influence on him!
