MANGA REVIEW | "Rooster Fighter" - Volume Six

To celebrate the awesomeness that is the sixth volume of Rooster Fighter (as well as the freaking anime announcement!), I present to you all my special seasoned chicken recipe:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 small chicken drumsticks
  • 1 tablespoon cane sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon basil
  • 1 tablespoon bread crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon grated cheese
  • 1 handful of cheese puffs (Cheetos Paws or KOIKEYA Sukoun BBQ Flavor preferred)
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable/canola oil
  • Teriyaki Sauce
  1. Place cheese puffs into a medium-sized plastic sandwich bag. Crush until they’re fully powdered.
  2.  Mix in the cane sugar, salt, oregano, basil, bread crumbs, and grated cheese with the powered cheese puffs. Shake well until fully mixed.
  3. Pour the vegetable/canola oil into a bowl.
  4. Dab the chicken with a paper towel to avoid salmonella.
  5. Dip the chicken into the vegetable/canola oil until drenched. Place in seasoning. Shake well until satisfied.
  6. Repeat Step Six for remaining drumsticks.
  7. Preheat air fryer to 380°F/195°C.
  8. Using an oil brush, baste the chicken legs with the teriyaki sauce.
  9. Insert chicken into air fryer once it’s fully heated.
  10. Cook for 17 minutes. Flip drumsticks after 8-9 minutes.
  11. Cool for five minutes, and then serve. Serves 1-2 people, depending on one’s hunger.

Okay, now as you let that chicken cook, let’s dive into the (chicken) meat of Rooster Fighter Volume Six. Although Keiji is the main star of the show, it’s two other characters that shine the brightest here. And the first is Chicken Little, whom we all thought met an untimely demise. Deep within that little nugget resides a power unlike anything else. Is it a demon, or a relic of Chicken Little’s past? We don’t know, but we kinda love what it’s capable of!

Whatever possesses Chicken Little, it certainly gets the job done! The fight between birdie and parasite is delightfully badass, as the fowl uses a nail to take on the grotesque thing. Everything that makes for a good fight is here, from cartoonish bashings and exploding entrails to even a cool look in Chicken Little’s eyes that lacks a single fuck! Trust me when I say that this weird fight is peak shonen action (even though this is technically a Seinen manga).

But it’s not just Chicken Little that shines. Nay, Keisuke gets a moment in the sun with his battle against the mysterious human-like devil. Again, this has all the makings of an epic fight. A monster who keeps getting stronger as the fight goes on, flashbacks to Keisuke’s youth, and even talks about a hidden power only 1/10 of chickens have. Yup, it absolutely goes into Dragon Ball rules here!

Our main Rooster Fighter hero Keiji does have his moments here. After all, he's the one that helps the rest of the powerful poultry find the weakness in the first demon they face. Cocky as he is, Keiji does care for the safety of his brother, even if he really doesn’t want to show it. So it’s thanks to his big brain and quick-enough thinking that Keisuke lives to fight who may in fact be one of the biggest baddies of all.

Perhaps it’s best not to spoil the rest of Rooster Fighter’s sixth volume. After all, cooking time may be almost done if you took your time reading this review. So take that chicken out of the air fryer, and as it cools down, place an order for this latest volume. (And if you were too dumb to not dive into the series when it first started, order the rest of the series!) Once again, the mysterious writer known as Shu Sakuratani has delivered some of the most action-packed battles you’ll ever read.
