Shameless Tuesdays: Livre 118 | Suburban Spell

Dark and hypnotic, Suburban Spell casts a trance-like magic through your speakers and into your minds. After spending the last year on their Split Levels album and remix EP follow-up, the Melbourne-based synthwave outlet is ready to unleash their newest EP Falling Down (in stores June 23rd)! Its leadoff single "Bright Gold Cross" features a futurist beat and nightlife vibes, with lyrics about appalling individuals seeking easy redemption. Until the day we're falling down arrives, Suburban Spell are here to lift us up with this week's Shameless Tuesdays!

Here's what Suburban Spell has to say about this week's playlist:

I wanted to pull together a playlist of songs that shaped me musically and showcased some of the wonderful Australian music that we have. This playlist has a few familiar favorites plus some surprises as well, the aussie acts I've put in here like Gold Class (hard post punk...with a very dark and sad undertone), Simona Castricum (poignant and heartfelt), Dark Water (lovely dark gothy songs), Body Maintenance (great Post Punk sound), Leipzig Lab and Ontic (noisy industrial but melodic too) plus a few old timers like Midnight Oil, The Reels, TheTriffids and The Church gives a snapshot of the wide and varied musical styles we have in this great southern land.

The other "non Aussie" stuff is pastiche of songs and sounds that in some way burnt their way into my psyche and have absolutely stamped themselves into my songwriting. From the driving mournful beauty of Fragrance and VNV Nation and the dry thump of Plague Pits are some of my newer favorites. I saw Pink turns Blue in New York last year and thought they were just wonderful and I must admit I have become a bit of a fan boy, i have added one of my favorite songs to the playlist.

I have some of the old classic in this playlist too, bands that have stood the test of time and will stay with me forever, Depeche Mode, Spandau Ballet, Ultravox, Japan, Kraftwerk, The Cure, The The, New Order all get a run, so much great music out there its hard to pull it all together. I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I did making it. I also snuck in one of my songs called Feel No More remixed by Robots in Love, I really love how this song has been totally reimagined, take a listen to the original and then listen to the remix and you'll see what I mean, cheers.
