There are right ways and wrong ways to do time-based RPGs. Thankfully, Smilegate and CONTROL9’s latest endeavor, MIRESI: Invisible Future, has found a very good formula to craft a strong time-based RPG. First, get an engaging story. Second, waifus. Lots and lots of waifus!

At the Tokyo Game Show booth, a long line of gamers patiently waited to give the demo of MIRESI: Invisible Future a go. With visuals of a ninja gyaru, a hammer-wielding nun, and a starry-eyed mage filling the area, it’s easy to see why con-goers of all genders were excited to see what this game was all about. Finally, after a 90-minute wait, I reached the demo, where I was treated to a story about stopping Armageddon. And surprisingly, the gameplay was just as appealing as the leading ladies!

As a Councilor, you’re tasked with guiding the combatants with their battles. When the time comes to strike, you’re tasked with choosing a light, strong, or ultimate attack to unleash on the enemies. In some cases, depending on the combatant, you can also aid your comrades by either healing them or pulling them away from an impending attack. If you mess up, you have a couple of chances to rewind time and attempt to avoid catastrophe.

The game is somewhat similar to some of CYGAMES’s mobile titles like Princess Connect. However, the visuals showcased in MIRESI: Invisible Future are light-years better than the anime chibi style of that game. Attacks are presented in a beautiful fashion, with ultimates bringing forth a gorgeous cinematic. And with the point-and-click style of gameplay, it’s very easy to set up a proper attack or evasive maneuver.

After the battle, I was able to do a bit of exploring. The fantasy world I was able to roam in for a few minutes did give off some similar vibes to various free-to-play games. However, the humor in the dialogue and the gorgeousness of the overall graphics easily made it a game I’m eager to dive into when it’s released. Also, since the game is time travel-based, I’m very curious to see where MIRESI: Invisible Future will take its players. (The artworks of Hokusai and Van Gogh could hint at other locations.)

At any rate, MIRESI: Invisible Future has a lot going for it. Beautiful visuals, a good battle system, and some movie-quality cinematics make this one of the biggest surprises at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. And yes, it’s got waifus for miles.
