Shameless Tuesdays: Livre 173 | The Melancholy Kings
While The Melancholy Kings are Jersey boys through and through, their sound bleeds pure Brit-Rock. Six years since their debut album, The Melancholy Kings have returned to the throne with their second album, Her Favorite Disguise. Filled with bite-y tracks like "Six Feet Down" and "Steady As She Goes", the band crafts songs that call back to the era of Beatlemania with the greatest of ease. But even within the harder stuff is something softer for the ears, as evident by "New Girl" and the lovely "Kensington". They may have some favorite disguises of their own, but in this week's Shameless Tuesdays, The Melancholy Kings show their truest selves for all to witness!

This playlist has a few thematic shifts and turns. We often throw an odd cover tune into our live set, and the first eight songs are ones that we have played from time to time. In particular, Who’s Tommy Overture is a good warmup/soundcheck song, and sometimes we’ll even start our show with it when we’re feeling a little cheeky. Those are followed by a cut from our first album that is a staple in our live shows.
Thereafter is a semi-random smattering of songs from some of our major influences – from XTC/The Dukes of Stratosphear to Patti Smith to Beck. During this phase, the mix goes into a mellow/dreamy period as it morphs into its NJ-centric theme, starting with legends Yo La Tengo, Luna and The Feelies. They are followed by songs from a number of bands that we also play in, used to play in, play gigs with and/or share our label with. We include here one of the standout tracks from our current album, because why not? The playlist ends with two songs that never fail to make me smile no matter my mood, by the Butthole Surfers and the final cut by Perrey & Kingsley that will put a jaunty bounce in your step as you carry on to whatever you may face next.
