MANGA REVIEW | "Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead" - Vol. 17

Outer space seemed like an inevitability for the world of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. After all, Akira and his comrades are quite the outside-the-box thinkers. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise when the gang finds themselves smack dab in the middle of a space center, as the seventeenth volume of Zom 100 places them in. Of course, there are zombies ready to muck up their plans.

What begins as a nice moment of rest and relaxation once again turns into a moment of fighting for one’s lives. Akira and the rest are enjoying some beachside fun, only for a mysterious rumbling to occur. The situation results in a plethora of zombies swarming everyone, with the gang almost losing their lives. Thankfully, they’re rescued just in the nick of time by a local scientist and his crew.

Thus begins a new goal of getting to experience zero gravity. Yes, Dr. STONE may have beaten Zom 100 in the shōnen space race, but these guys manage to get up there in a quicker timeframe than Senku and the Kingdom of Science. However, it’s not thanks to a lot of brain power; it’s due to a brain hunger! When the zombies break into the space station, chaos ensues, resulting in Akira and the gang attempting to salvage the mission.

We get a lot of the usual fun when everyone’s taking on the undead, only this time with matching spacesuits! Plenty of weapons, wrestling moves, and full-frontal male nudity are what’s needed to hold back the swarm of zombies, as everyone races to the rocket. From there, the gang manages to cross off yet another thing off of Akira’s list, as they enter space and get as far away from the zombies as possible.

Well…I say that, but of course there are freaking space zombies on the International Space Station! It takes some clever thinking to get out of this new mess, which gives us a hilarious visual of an undead astronaut going full windmill. And while being up in space is amazing, there needs to be a game plan to get home. The good news is there are escape pods on the ISS; the bad news is that there’s only a tiny bit of electricity left, and only one way to get more.

That’s when Zom 100 drops a big bombshell to end its seventeenth volume. What this new info may do to help with the gang’s quest for a cure is up in the air, but with a discovered source, it’s clear that they’ll have some new data to aid in their fight against the zombies. But first: getting home. Will they make it, or will the spinning zombies thwart their plans? Knowing these guys, a plan will certainly come together…
