Shameless Tuesdays: Livre 165 | Duncan Lloyd
We can all use a little rewinding these days, be it to undo past mistakes or alleviate stress. Duncan Lloyd understands this well, with his new album Unwound (available this Friday) being a great tool to get into chillax mode! "Laugh So Loud", which features The Cloud Nothings’ Joe Boyer, is about dealing with pretending to be fine when things really aren't. Yes, it's a gloomy theme, but it's presented in a way that's both bouncy and sincere. Meanwhile, "Rituals" deals with the daily mundane habits we all do in order to get through the day. "One Step Closer to the Dam" takes the moment things are about to break and steps hard on the accelerator. After all, if it's bound to explode anyway, why not just speed up the process? But as we wait to be Unwound, Duncan Lloyd finds the heart of the melody in this week's Shameless Tuesdays!
Here's what Duncan has to say about this week's playlist:
I guess I’ve been missing a certain kind of melody so I made a playlist with melody at it’s heart. These are songs that also caught my ear when travelling. I find that if something sparks my interest, I will make a note of it or put it in a playlist and here this one is. The playlist also includes my friend Joe Boyer (Autopolitan, Cloud Nothings) from Cleveland, who plays some guitar on my new record, “Unwound” and it also features my friend Nicole Yun (Eternal Summers). Joey and myself played some additional guitar for on her recent album, “Matter”, check it out.
I partly recorded some of my new album in Ireland. It was special to go back to where my mum’s family originate. To play & record over in Ireland is something I’ve always wanted to do so we recorded at Analogue Catalogue Studios with Julie McLarnon. She recorded Lankum there, who feature on this playlist with a song named, “Newcastle”, the city where I live. Last but not least, I’ve included a song by my other band, Nano Kino with my pal, Sarah Suri, to me she’s one of the best songwriters in the North East. We’re releasing our first album later this year. Hopefully we’ll get to play Boston one day.
Hope you enjoy this. Thank you Boston Bastard Brigade !
Best, Duncan
