Shameless Tuesdays: Livre 157 | Restless Mosaic

A cry for help comes softly in "Lost Within This Time", the latest single from Restless Mosaic. With the aid of Lovespirals vocalist Anji Bee, the song is a haunting trip through a lonely mind. As the sounds of elevator doors constantly close, the feeling of isolation draws closer. "Lost Within This Time" isn't a song; it's an indie horror track where you're the star and main target. Hopefully, when Restless Mosaic's full album Quality Mirrors is unleashed on March 7, an escape will be found. But until then, you'll have to sit put with this week's Shameless Tuesdays to keep your sanity in check.

Here's what Restless Mosaic have to say about this week's playlist:

Like the best people, the best music is distinctive without forcing you to notice.

It took me many years to understand this. In my teens and twenties - prior to Restless Mosaic - if I was excited about a rhyme scheme or a chord sequence, then I was going to center it so hard that there was nothing else for the listener to care about. This approach resonated with almost no one, because it was unwittingly self-serving.

This playlist is built around Susumu Yokota's Love or Die album, one of my absolute favorites. It was his second straight album entirely in 3/4 time, so in line with that the entire playlist has no 4/4 anywhere, not even for a measure. The list is in chronological order, featuring 11 songs on either side of the three Yokota tracks I picked, for a total of 25 - all numbers far from four. It features Shameless clients (Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance and Jah Wobble), friends (Electric Doormat, the original reason I started recording music, who turned into the Mercury Tree and helped launch the career of Smashing Pumpkins drummer Mike Byrne), and fellow Shameless Promotion PR clients who are friends (Rose Alaimo, who sings with me on "Nearest Pool of Chaos" from upcoming album Quality Mirrors).

But songs and playlists aren't doing their job if you need to know those types of things to understand them. Songs should hit you where you live, not ask you to move for their sake. Multiple albums in, only one reviewer has even mentioned the time signatures on my albums, even though 30-50% of their runtimes live outside 4/4. That is completely as it should be.
