MANGA REVIEW | "Love’s in Sight!" - Volume Eight [FINALE]

It’s sad that we’ve come to the end of Love’s in Sight! Fortunately, it appears both Yukiko and Morio end things in a great place, with hopes of a bright future for the both of them. Throughout the series, we saw these two tackle everything society tossed in their direction, as they were judged head-to-toe for things they had no control over. The eighth and final volume continues with that trend, as a new obstacle appears before them: Yukiko’s dad.

As any loving father would do, Yukiko’s papa just wants what’s best for his little princess. So the sight of Morio being next to his daughter jars him, as he fears she’s been mixing with the wrong crowd. Thankfully, Yukiko puts things into a perspective that makes it hard for him to argue out of. After all, it’s be hypocritical for the dad to judge Morio, seeing as he wouldn’t want his daughter to be judged the same way.

Quickly, not only does Yukiko’s papa see the good in Morio, he also realizes why he’s been the best boyfriend for his daughter. Morio has grown up with a lot of bad luck in his life, ranging from being treated over his facial scar to having neither of his parents in his life. But this is a guy who takes the bad things around him, and uses that energy to spread good feelings and a bountiful of cheer. Author Uoyama has crafted the perfect boyfriend in Morio, with him being the kind of character that readers can actually learn a thing or two about having a big heart.

This final volume of Love’s in Sight! also has our couple taking a couple of big trips. A visit to the beach gives Yukiko her first chance to feel and experience the ocean. It’s good that she has a person like Morio in her life, who guides her to the waters and even helps with swimming. The way the two connect here is cute and sweet, as Morio and Yukiko create new memories together.

Speaking of which, an overnight trip between Morio and Yukiko is where the two truly cement themselves as a couple. Although it’s funny seeing Morio be terrible at describing things, how Yukiko shows her appreciation for what he does is another example of why she’s also been good to him. It’s clear that Morio isn’t always the brightest bulb on the shelf, but he makes up for it with genuine love and care that any woman would crave to have. Even when he accidentally sleeps in Yukiko’s room, the situation is treated as something sweet and silly, rather than naughty and risqué.

And then…Love’s in Sight! kind of ends. We get some closure between Izumi and Shishio, with the former realizing how unhealthy it is to fawn over someone who’ll never love you the same way. (The latter quickly sees that he’s been doing the same thing to Morio!) We also see what the next chapter in Yukiko and Morio’s life will be like, with both seeking future education. After that, it’s all up to the reader’s interpretation.

While it doesn’t offer a closure or a hint of what’ll happen many years down the road, readers will put two & two together and see that Yukiko and Morio are gonna be all right. There may have been a couple of bumps on the road for the two of them, but it appears to be smooth sailing towards a Happily Ever After they greatly deserve. They worked together to get to where they’re at, with both people acting as their strength when it was greatly needed. Odds are, they’ll continue to be there for one another, knocking down barriers and making those quick to judge think twice about what people can accomplish.

I cannot recommend Love’s in Sight! enough. These eight volumes have been flawless in both the rom-com department and the educational one. This is a series that taught well how those with disabilities can overcome the odds and live happy, fulfilling lives. Never does it preach or bash its lessons to annoying levels; it simply tells it like it is, with hopes that readers can be aware and respectful of those who are different from the norm.

For now, we must bid farewell to Yukiko and Morio. Maybe one day, Uoyama will revisit this duo down the line, perhaps with a one-shot or maybe a mini-arc about a precious moment in their lives. (Perhaps VIZ Media can also get an anime green-lit like they did with a certain combat rooster!) Until that day comes, I’m grateful for what we were given from this series. If there is one word to describe Love’s in Sight! as a whole, it’d be this: perfect.
