MUSIC REVIEW | Wednesday Campanella Cooks A Piping Hot "Pop Delivery"
For a dozen years, Wednesday Campanella (or Suiyoubi no Campanella, as they’re known in Japan) has crafted the songs worthy of any high-end club. Although they’ve tinkered with their sound here and there, the trio’s main aim is to get the bass dropping heavy and hard. On their latest EP Pop Delivery, the sound is as groovy as it is colorful!
All eight songs are pure party vibes; the question is what sort of party you’d like to experience. If you want something pink and carefree, “Shōtoku Taishi” has got your number with plenty of style and a sprinkling of traditional flute. “Carolina” takes a cue from Galantis with its uplifting beat, only to drop some in-your-face rap that both frightens and brightens. With “Mermaid”, things get tropical with a sound that’s perfect for a sunny day at the beach.
The mood of the Pop Delivery is set early on with opener “Aka Neko”, taking on the form of a futuristic ride filled with smiles. Things get heavenly on “Yūrei to Sakka”, as the spirits fly high whilst vocalist Utaha hits the notes high enough to reach the Pearly Gates. In the opposite direction, “Archimedes” lets the glocks click as DJ Kenmochi Hidefumi transforms the deadly weapons into audible beauty. In a similar frame, “Tamamo no Mae” brings a drum corp beat with a cool Shibuya-like essence and angry machine sounds.
Pop Delivery ends with “Shitennō”, cooling things down after a party that went every direction. It’s got attitude and confidence blaring all throughout, a necessity for those wanting to hit the dance floor. But even if you have a little shyness in your system, Wednesday Campanella will be your wingman. It may run less than half an hour, but Pop Delivery will satisfy your musical taste buds as wildly as a meat-lover’s pizza made by your local restaurant. (With extra cheese, of course.)
