Shameless Tuesdays: Livre 133 | Aly G
Her name may match a certain Sacha Baron Cohen character, but unlike the faux chav, Brooklyn's Aly G keeps it real and on the streets. Her attitude roars like a fire in her recent song "Super Power", as she whoops the asses of any mugger or attacker with her words. The same can be said about her previous (and debut) single "Build It Up", which proudly raises a middle finger against gentrification. With these two songs, Aly G is proving to the masses why you wouldn't wanna mess with her space! And to keep building it up, Aly G's prepped a super-powered Shameless Tuesdays to keep the foundation shaking!

This is a playlist of music that has inspired me as Aly G. It includes hip hop songs I listened to as a kid by Coolio, LL Cool J, House of Pain, and Kelis; and music I discovered later that opened me up to conscious hip hop like KRS-One, Nas, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, and Black Star. Since my music as Aly G has a comedic edge with a lot of women's empowerment themes I included some artists that inspired me comedically like Lady Sovereign, Big Daddy Kane, and Boyfriend; and artists that represent what it is to be a strong woman like Queen Latifah, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Monie Love, Missy Elliot, Salt-N-Pepa, Rapsody, and Aaliyah.
My music is also informed by the fact that I started as a singer/songwriter on piano and synths, so artists that sample some of my influences from other genres hold a special place in my musical heart, including- Nas' "I Can" sampling Beethoven's "Für Elise", Rapsody's "This Woman's Work" sampling Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work", and The Fugees' "Ready or Not" sampling Enya's "The Bodicea." Other artists on the playlist represent a fun and playful side of hip hop for me like De la Soul, Beastie Boys, RUN-D.M.C., and Hilltop Hoods. I also included current artists like Little Simz, Childish Gambino, and Kid Cudi who are pushing the boundaries of the genre and putting their own innovative spins on their tracks. This was such a fun playlist to make because I got to reach a lot of corners of the genre that have inspired me to make the music I make!
